Account and purchase verification. The code proves the person holds the phone number on the account, which is the cheapest and most universal proof there is.

Why it sometimes takes a moment

Codes travel through the recipient's network, and some networks report and deliver more slowly than others. A code that has not arrived in a minute is usually worth requesting again rather than waiting.

What a good code message looks like

The code at the front, the sender name recognisable, one short line of context and no link. Anything longer invites hesitation and anything with a link invites suspicion.
